[UPDATE] In-game XMB coming June 18?

Earlier this month we reported that trophies would be coming to the PlayStation 3 in the next system update, firmware 2.4. Recently other news outlets have been reporting similar tips, stating that not only will trophies be available, but full in-game XMB and use of custom in-game soundtracks.
According to Gaming-Age.com, PS3 users can expect such features as universal friends lists and in-game messaging. Also it's been confirmed that Sony already has a title with trophy support on the way. Sony's Official PlayStation website for upcoming Pixeljunk title, PixelJunk™ Eden, has been listed to support the new trophy system.
"The SDK 2.40 will be available to dev. late in June. The actual Firmware 2.40 might see the light of day a lot sooner (my personal guess would be launch aligned or slightly before MGS4 )." - stated PSU’s forum insider.
Also with the addition of improved Audio/Video communication, it's safe to say Sony is finally providing it's users with a better online community, nearing the quality of Microsoft's Xbox Live.

Videogaming247 has obtained some new tidbits of information regarding the above story.
-Sony is currently shifting through the PlayStation 3's library of games in order to see if the XMB is fully compatible or not. It is expected the new menu system, in-game messaging etc will function in all games, though the current black menu screen will likely be retained for the majority of titles.
-User music is only included in new development tools, which have only just been distributed to coders. Therefore, existing games won't utilize the feature unless they are patched to do so.
-The same applies to the new trophy system; developers have only just obtained the tools necessary to input the feature into their software, so it'll be a while until they show up in games.
-Some elements of the XMB won't be usable in-game until after the next firmware update, such as the photo viewer.

According to a PSU source, firmware 2.4 is scheduled to release June 18th. Stay tuned for more infomation.

Yeah they might want to use a diffrent picture perhaps one from the new youtuibe video . As that one will confuse people because it is fake.

Testing if xmb is fully compatible with the library of games? I didn't think it had anything to do with the game itself. The way I thought the 360 did it was just to pause the game and it was the console itself that ran the game in the background while the user messed with custom tracks etc. in the foreground? I always assumed this would be the same for the PS3. While the game is paused in the background the PS3 OS would do the job of running the custom sound track?

There's a high probability that (if this report has any truth to it at all) some games own features like ingame messaging and custom soundtracks would be redundant or cause a conflict. That's what I think they mean by testing for compatability. If you're playing Super Stardust HD with It's custom music option and then turn on the PS3s XMB version would it crash the system, wipe your hard drive or just play two songs at the same time? This is what testing is about, finding out if these thigns would be an issue.
As for "doin' it like Micro$oft" cant we please think outside of the stupid "Box" Just because they're both next gen systems dosent mean sony wants or even CAN do it the same way, they're different hardware their companies hold patents on different operating system designs. At any point M$ could claim Sony was ripping them off if the XMB worked ANYTHING like the dashboard and the last thing any of us wants to see is a direct legal battle between the two that could go longer than the lifes of the hardware itself!

@cybrdrac XMB stands for xcross media bar. pronounced cross media bar. Which is the name of the PS3's operating system. This is where all the system options are including your friends list, messages, photos, and music.

Wait...support just shipping? What happened to the support for Trophies supposedly included with Uncharted when it shipped? Also, what has happened to the "gamer card" or whatever it was called that leaked when Mark Rein was doing a UT3 demo? Is that stuff linked to Home and NOT this feature set, or what?

For those of you who say the pic they have up is fake, you are right. That's one GameInformer made (which is why you see GameInformer at the button right behind the controls). I believe PSU is using this pic because the videos that show the XMB are really blury, and sense it looks almost exactly like this pic, why not use it? But I assure you, the update is real! If you type in "In-game XMB" on youtube, you'll see three videos, two showing the XMB along with bioshock and one with Veolicty bowling and the in-game music option. So in the words of the famous anime ninja,"Believe It".
